美は希望をもたらす

　2025年4月13日から 10月13日まで、「大阪・関西万博」が「いのち輝く未来社会のデザイン」をテーマにして、夢洲で開催されます。大阪で開催される万博は今回で3回目。第1回は1970年の大阪万博、第2回は1990年の国際花と緑の博覧会。今年、165の国・地域、国際機関が参加予定です。

　皆さんご存じのように、バチカンも「大阪・関西万博」に参加します。バチカンは、世界最小の独立国家でありながら、カトリック教会の中心として宗教・文化・芸術の歴史に大きな影響を与えた国です。日本で開催される万博へのバチカンの参加は、1970年の大阪万博に続き、2度目となります。

　今回の万博でバチカンは、イタリア館内にパビリオンを設置し、「美は希望をもたらす（Beauty Generates Hope）」をテーマにした展示を行います。

　これは、「美」が人々に希望を与え、未来への可能性を示すという考えに基づいています。このテーマを通じて、芸術、信仰、人間の尊厳の大切さを世界に伝えることを目的としています。

　バチカンパビリオンの目玉は、イタリアの巨匠カラヴァッジョによる名画『キリストの埋葬』（1602-1604年）の展示です。この作品はバチカン美術館に所蔵されており、万博のために日本で展示されることになります。

　『キリストの埋葬』は、キリストの死をテーマにしたドラマティックな構図とリアルな表現が特徴の傑作であり、愛、献身、信仰の変革の象徴とされています。この作品を通じて、万博を訪れる人々に「希望」を与えることが期待されています。

　美は希望をもたらす」というテーマは2025年の聖年のテーマ「希望の巡礼者」と密接な関連があります。​バチカンは、万博での展示を通じて、芸術と美が人々に希望をもたらし、未来へのインスピレーションとなることを伝えることを目指しています。

Beauty Generates Hope

              The 2025 Expo will be held on Yumeshima Island, from April 13 to October 13, under the theme “Designing Future Society for Our Lives”. This will be the third Expo to be held in Osaka. The first was held 55 years ago, the 1970 Osaka Expo, and the second in 1990, the International Garden and Greenery Exposition. Approximately 155 countries and international organizations are scheduled to participate this year.

              As you all know, the Vatican will also participate in the Expo. The Vatican is the smallest independent state in the world. As the center of the Catholic Church, it has had a major impact on the history of religion, culture, and art. Following the 1970 Osaka Expo, this will be the Vatican's second participation in a World Expo to be held in Japan.

              At this 2025 Expo, the theme of the Vatican participation is “Beauty Generates Hope.” The Vatican will have a space inside the Italian Pavilion.

              This is based on the idea that beauty gives people hope and shows them the possibilities for the future. Through this theme, the exhibition aims to convey to the world the importance of art, faith, and human dignity.

              The centerpiece of the Vatican Pavilion is the exhibition of the masterpiece “The Burial of Christ” (1602-1604) by the Italian master Caravaggio. The work is in the collection of the Vatican Museums and will be on display in Japan for the Expo.

              “The Burial of Christ” is a masterpiece characterized by its dramatic composition and realistic representation of the theme of Christ's death, and is considered a symbol of love, devotion, and the transformation of faith. It is hoped that through this work of art, the Expo will give visitors to the Expo a sense of hope.

              The theme “Beauty Generates Hope” is closely related to the theme of the 2025 Jubilee Year, “Pilgrims of Hope.” Through its display at the Expo, the Vatican aims to convey that art and beauty bring hope to people and serve as inspiration for the future.

              Find some time to go and see Caravaggio's “The Burial of Christ,” one of the world's most famous paintings, and you might experience the hope brought by art and faith.
