主キリストは、復活された

　「地球の中心には何があるのか？」と問われれば、おそらくいくつかの答えが思い浮かぶだろう。金属かもしれないし、気体かもしれないし、水かもしれない。しかし、もし私が「地球の中心は味噌でできている」と言ったら、おそらく皆さんは「どうかしている」と言うだろう。確かに答えはわからないが、だからといって何も言う理由はない。

今、私たちは復活祭を祝っており、皆でイエス様の墓を見ている。墓は空である。なぜ墓が空なのかを説明するために、私たちはいくつかの答えを出すことができる。他の人が来て、イエス様の遺体を盗んだと言うこともできます。また、イエス様が十字架から降ろされた時、本当は死んでいなかったと言うこともできます。死んでいるように見えたが、実は生きていたので、墓に入れられた後、イエス自身が墓から出てきたのだ。これらの説明を聞くと、金属やガスや水の答えのように、私たちには合理的に思える。しかし、もし私が、真実はイエスが死から復活したということだと言ったら、おそらく「そんなのおかしい！死者は復活しない！」と言う人がいるだろう。この反応は、先ほど話した味噌に似ているからだ。

このことを理解すれば、トマスの体験を理解するのはずっと容易になる。彼は復活したイエス様を見なかった。だから、イエス様が復活したと聞かされた時、イエス様が見えなければ信じないと言ったのだ。彼の頭の中の何かが、死者はよみがえらない、そんなことはあり得ないと言ったのだ。そして8日後、復活したイエス様が再び現れ、今度はトマスがイエス様を見て信じることができた。

証拠を求めることは間違っていない。トマスもそうしたし、おそらく私たち自身もそうしてきた。しかし、信仰は証拠の上に成り立つものではない。実際、私たちはあの弟子たちのように復活したイエス様を見たわけではありません。しかし、私たちはイエス様が復活されたと信じている。なぜだろうか？

信仰は他者の証言の上に成り立つ。私が見たから信じるのではなく、あなたがたが見たから信じるのです。あなたがたが見たから、見たことを私に証言してくれたのです。だから、キリストの復活を目撃した人々の証言はとても重要なのです。その証しこそ、私たちが受け取り、信じた証しなのだ。イエス・キリストは死者の中から復活し、罪と死に打ち勝った。

しかも、これを信じることは、冒頭で話した味噌のような可笑しいではない。イエス・キリストの復活には深い意味があり、人間の心の欲望や切望に対する完全で決定的な答えなのだ。

証拠に裏打ちされた信仰は、個人の信仰を生む。「見たから信じる」。しかし、証しに根ざした信仰は、私たちを教会という共同体に引き入れる。「私が信じるのは、他の人が見て、私を証ししてくれたからです。」教会で受けたあかしと、復活したイエス・キリストへの信仰を神に感謝しよう。

Christ the Lord is risen

              If we were to ask, ‘What is at the center of the Earth?’ Perhaps several answers would come to mind. Maybe some metal, maybe some gas, maybe some water. But if I were to say that the center of the Earth is made up of miso, you would probably tell me that I am crazy. We certainly don't know the answer, but that's no reason to say anything.

Now we are celebrating Easter and we all look at the tomb of Jesus. The tomb is empty. And we could give several answers to explain why the tomb is empty. We could say that other people came and stole Jesus' body. We could also say that Jesus was not really dead when he was taken down from the cross. He looked dead, but he was actually alive, so after he was placed in the tomb, he himself came out of the tomb. When we hear these explanations they seem reasonable to us, like the metal, gas or water answers. But if I were to say that the truth is that Jesus has risen from the dead, perhaps there would be someone who would say, ‘That's crazy! The dead don't rise!’ Because this response resembles the Miso we were talking about earlier.

If we understand this, it is much easier to understand Thomas' experience. He did not see the risen Jesus. So when he was told that Jesus had risen, he said that if he didn't see Him he wouldn't believe it. Something inside his head told him that the dead don't rise, that it's impossible. And eight days later, the risen Jesus appeared again, and this time Thomas was able to see Him and believe.

Asking for evidence is not wrong. Thomas did it and perhaps we have done it ourselves. However, faith is not something that is built on evidence. In fact, we have not seen the risen Jesus as those disciples did. Yet we believe that Jesus is risen. Why?

Faith is founded on the testimony of others. I do not believe because I have seen, but I believe because you have seen. And because you have seen, you have given me testimony of what you have seen. That is why the testimony of those who witnessed Christ's resurrection is so important. That testimony is the one we have received and believed in. Jesus Christ has risen from the dead and has conquered sin and death.

Moreover, believing this is not madness, like the miso we were talking about at the beginning. The resurrection of Jesus Christ has a profound meaning and is the complete and definitive answer to the desires and longings of the human heart.

A faith that is grounded in proof gives rise to an individual faith. ‘I believe because I have seen. However, a faith that is grounded in witness brings us into the community of the Church. “I believe because others have seen and have borne witness to me.” Let us thank God for the witness we have received in the Church and for our faith in the risen Jesus Christ.
