「私を愛していますか」

「私を愛していますか」。ヨハネの福音に、この質問は復活されたイエスがシモンペトロに言われました。イエスは私たち、一人ひとりにもこの質問をしています。イエスにどう答えますか。

この質問の答えは単に“YES”OR“NO” で終わるのではありません。このことを思いめぐらしながら、自分はどのぐらい神様を愛しているか見てみましょう。

　「愛」と言うテーマは永久のテーマと言われているし、このテーマについての音楽、美術、文学などの作品は数え切れません。愛の定義、表現は山ほどあると思いますがその中で、この男女の愛についてこう書かれています。「恋愛していると心はときめき、思いやりを込めた幸せな気持ちに満たされた。頭にあるのは愛しい人のことばかりで、いつもその人のことを思い、一緒にいたいと慕い焦がれる。一緒にいるときは満ち足りた平和な気持ちになり、その人を幸せにすることしか念頭にない。」（愛と性と結婚生活）

　この定義で自分の神への愛をチェックしてみたらどうでしょうか。

　まずは心の動きですね。神は共にいてくださることを思い、愛で心はときめき、思いやりを込めた幸せな気持ちに満たされた体験がありますか。少し振り返ってみましょう。

次、思いという面ですね。神のことばかりで、いつも神のことを思い、一緒にいたいと慕い焦がれるでしょうか。神といつも一致することを心から望んでいるでしょか。ミサに与り、神との個人的な時間を過ごすために喜んで足を教会に運んでいますか、神との時間はスケジュール一番の優先順位になっているでしょうか。勉強、仕事、何かする時、神に捧げることを忘れていませんか。生活で神の現存を意識して、神に心を向かうひと時があるでしょう。

　最後に相手のために自分はどういう行動で愛を表し、伝えていくということです。ヴァレンタイン、恋人の誕生日にプレゼントをあげたい時、いろいろ考えたり、迷ったりしますね。恋人は何が好きだろう、何をしたら喜んでもらうでしょう。相手に幸せを感じさせたいという気持ちではないでしょうか。

　そのように神は何が好きでしょうね。何を私たちに望んでいる、やってほしいかと思ったことがありますか。神様は私たち一人ひとりを愛しているから、きっと一番望んでいるのは私たちが幸せに生きていると思います。だから、自分は幸せに生きることが神にとって素晴らしいプレゼントでしょう。世界の皆が仲良く幸せを過ごすことは神にとって一番望んでいることだと思います。

　そのイエスの質問にペトロは「はい、主よ、あなたは何もかもご存じです。わたしがあたなを愛していることを、あなたはよく知っておられます。」と答えました。そうですね。イエスは私たちがどのように神を愛しているか、よくご存じです。けれども、私たちは自分自身で自分の神への愛はどうかなぁと、確かめる必要があると思います。

　ペトロに聞いた後、イエスは「私の羊の群れを飼いなさい。」と言われました。神の愛と兄弟姉妹への愛は切っても切り離せないのです。「心を尽くし、精神を尽くし、思いを尽くしてあなたの神である主を愛しなさい。」そして、「隣人を自分のように愛しなさい」（マタイ22。37、39）これはイエスがはっきり教えてくださいました。

　特に、６月はイエスの御心の月です。いつも人間に対する燃えているイエスの心に向かって、感謝しながら、その愛を答えて生きることができますようにお恵みを願いましょう。

“Do You Love Me?”

              Do you love me? In John's Gospel, Simon Peter was asked this question by the risen Jesus. Jesus asks this question of each of us as well. How do you answer Jesus?

              The answer to this question is not simply “yes” or “no.” Let's ponder the response and see how much we love God.

              The theme of “love” is said to be eternal, and has inspired countless works of music, art, and literature. There are also innumerable definitions and expressions of love. One is this about the love between a man and a woman: “When you are in love, your heart is moved, and your mind is filled with love. When I was in love, my heart was thrilled and filled with a happy feeling of compassion. All I could think about was my beloved, always thinking of him or her, longing to be with him or her. When I am with someone, I feel content and peaceful, and all I can think about is making that person happy” (The doctor and Christian marriage, P. H. Dunn, Japanese title: Love, sex, and married life).

              Check your love for God with this definition and reflect on it for a moment: “First of all, it is the movement of the heart. Have you ever had the experience where your heart was thrilled with love and filled with happy, compassionate feelings, thinking that God is with us?”

              Next, consider the aspect of thoughts. Are you all about God, always thinking about Him and longing to be with Him? Do you truly desire to always be in union with God? Are you willing to go to church to attend Mass and spend personal time with God? When you study, work, or do anything else, do you remember to give it to God? Are there times in your life when you are aware of God's presence in your life and turn your heart toward Him?

              Finally, what actions will you take to express and convey your love for the other person? When you want to give a gift for Valentine's Day or your sweetheart’s birthday, you may be thinking a lot and wondering. What will my love like? What will make him or her happy? Isn't our desire to make the other person feel happy?

              Ask what God would like in the same way. Have you ever wondered what He wants us to want or do? Since God loves each of us, I am sure that what He wants most is for us to live happily. So, it would be a wonderful gift for God that I live a happy life. I think it is God's greatest desire for everyone in the world to get along and be happy.

              To Jesus' question, Peter said, “Yes, Lord, you know everything. You know very well that I love you. And Jesus answered, “Yes, Lord, you know everything.” Yes, that's right. Jesus knows how we love God.

              But I think we need to check ourselves to see how our love for God is.

              After asking Peter, Jesus said, “Feed my flock” (John 21:15). “The love of God and the love of our brothers and sisters are inseparable. You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. Love your neighbor as yourself” (Matthew 22: 37, 39). This is what Jesus clearly taught.

              This is especially important now. June is the month of the will of Jesus. Let us ask for grace that we may live our lives toward the heart of Jesus, which is always burning for humanity. Let us respond to that love with gratitude.
