Bell Tower and Bells
Built at the time of the dedication of the church in 1963, the 67-meter-high bell tower stood next to St. Mary's Cathedral as if protecting her (see page 8). The bell tower was demolished on March 6, 1995, after it rang sadly during the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake.
The bell tower was fitted with eight bells of various sizes. Currently, four bells remain in Tamatsukuri. One is located at the entrance to the bishop's residence and three at the entrance to the cathedral; one of the three once again rang out its rich sound to tell the time during the Ukon Justo Takayama Blessing Ceremony on February 2, 2017.
