The Chapel
To the left of the inner sanctuary is the
Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament, and to
the left as you enter is the stained glass
window of St. Francis Xavier (page 36). The carved wooden cross in the center of the altar was made by Shoji Hosoi in 1986.

The statues of St. Agnes and St. Francis Xavier, created by sculptor G. Lungarger, who created the Way ofthe Cross, are placed on both sides of the altar.
St. Agnes is the patron saint of the church first consecrated in Tamatsukuri.
Also, St. Francis Xavier was the patron saint of the church that was rebuilt after the war.
On the way to the Chapel, there is a relief with the motif of “The Burial of Christ”. This is the scene of one of the greatest tragedies of this world, that of a mother who has buried her own child. The statue of the Pietà in St. Peter’s Basilica (by Michelangelo) is well-known. This relief can be said to be the Pietà of St. Peter’s Basilica. (See Gospel of John 19:25, 38)
