他者を助けるために生きる

私は朝、修道院から玉造教会まで、通勤に一時間ほどかかります。その通勤時間の間に、さまざまなことや人々を観察して楽しんでいます。仕事に向かう会社員やサラリーマン、勉強に行く学生や生徒、旅行に来ている外国人、買い物をする人々。毎日、多くの人の姿が目に入ります。その中で、特に心に残った一つの場面があります。
玉造教会に向かう途中、森ノ宮キューズモールの辺りを通ります。そこでは、時々、一人のおばあさんと息子さんが一緒に歩いているのを見かけます。おばあさんはかなり年を重ねており、自分の足で歩くのも難しそうです。杖や歩行器の代わりに、息子さんの手をしっかりと握り、その手に支えられて歩いています。ここまでは特に変わったことではありませんがその息子さんは目が見えない方です。家からここまでの距離は分かりませんが、もしお母さんがいなければ、息子さんはきっと大変な思いをすることでしょう。お母さんは、息子さんの案内役をしているのです。
ある日、すれ違うときに目が合ったので、私は「おはようございます」と挨拶しました。お母さんは少し大きな声で返してくださいました。すぐに息子さんが「誰ですか」と尋ねると、お母さんは「若いお嬢さん」と答えました。お母さんは、目の不自由な息子さんにとって“目”の役割も果たしているのです。
この親子の姿を目にするたびに、神様が私たちを創られたとき、私たちは「相互のために」、お互いに愛し、支え合い、助け合って生きることを望んでいるのだということを確信します。人間は完璧な人はいません。誰も一人で生きることはできません。「人は他の人間とかかわらなければ、本当に人間らしくなれないということです。」（カトリック教会の教え）。それなのに、弱い私たちはしばしばそのことを忘れてしまい、自分中心になり、相手の存在を無視したり、傷つけたりしてしまうことがあります。しかし、私たちは神の愛から生まれ、神の愛の中でしか心は満たされないことが分かります。だからこそ、周りの人に目を向け、お互いに助け合いながら生きることができるよう、常に神様の恵みを願い、日々努力していきましょう。
１０月に入り、ロザリオの月を迎えます。私たちの母であるマリア様のもと心を寄せ、御母の御手に支えられ、導かれますように。
Living to Help Others

My commute from the convent to Catholic Tamatsukuri Church takes about an hour each morning. During that commute, I enjoy observing the wide variety of people: Office workers and salarymen heading to work, students going to school, foreign tourists visiting, people shopping. Every day, I see many people. Among them, one particular scene has stayed with me.
On my way to Tamatsukuri Church, I pass near Morinomiya Q's Mall. There, I sometimes see an elderly woman walking with her son. The grandmother is quite advanced in years and seems to have difficulty walking on her own. Instead of a cane or walker, she firmly holds her son's hand, supported by it as she walks. Up to this point, it's nothing particularly unusual; but her son is blind. I don't know the distance from their home to the mall, but without his mother, the son would surely have a very hard time. His mother is his guide.
One day, our eyes met as we passed each other, so I greeted her with “Good morning.” She replied in a slightly louder voice. Immediately, her son asked, “Who is it?” and she answered, “A young lady.” For her visually impaired son, his mother also serves as his “eyes.”
Every time I see this mother and son, I am convinced that when God created us, He intended us to live “for one another”—loving, supporting, and helping each other. No human is perfect. No one can live alone. “A person cannot truly become human unless they relate to other human beings” (Catholic teaching). Yet we weak humans often forget this, becoming self-centered, ignoring the existence of others, or even hurting them. However, we know we are born of God's love and our hearts can only be truly fulfilled within God's love. That is why we should constantly seek God's grace and strive daily to turn our eyes toward those around us, living to help and support each other.
As October begins, we enter the Month of the Rosary. May we turn our hearts to Mary, our Mother, and be supported and guided by her hand.
