「すべての人に平和がありますように」―教皇レオ14世の最初のメッセージ

2025年5月8日、カトリック教会に新しい教皇が誕生しました。ロバート・フランシス・プレヴォスト枢機卿が選出され、「教皇レオ14世（Papa Leone XIV）」として新たな歩みを始められました。バチカンのサンピエトロ大聖堂のバルコニーに姿を現された新教皇が、最初に語られた言葉は、静かで深い祈りのようでした。
「La pace sia con tutti voi（すべての人に平和がありますように）」
この一言が、混乱と分断のただ中にある世界に向けて発せられたことは、多くの人々に希望と慰めをもたらしたように思います。形式的なあいさつではなく、むしろ新しい教皇のビジョンを象徴するメッセージであったと感じられました。
その後の就任ミサにおいても、教皇レオ14世は一貫して「対話」や「赦し」の大切さを語られました。イエス・キリストが復活後、弟子たちに語られた「平和があなたがたにあるように」（ヨハネ20章）という聖書の言葉を引用しながら、現代社会と教会が進むべき方向を優しく、しかしはっきりと示されました。
今日の世界を見渡すと、国と国の対立、地域の紛争、民族の分断、家庭内の不和、SNSでの言葉の暴力など、さまざまなレベルで「争い」や「分断」が広がっています。そのような状況の中で、「すべての人に平和がありますように」という言葉は、ただの美しいあいさつではなく、私たち一人ひとりへの呼びかけであると感じます。
この言葉は、どこにいても、誰といても、心の中でそっと唱えることができます。職場でも、学校でも、家庭でも、インターネットの世界でも、私たちは平和の担い手になることができるのです。
世界がほんの少しでもやさしくなるために、私たちにできることは何でしょうか。この言葉を心に留めることで、私たちの態度や言葉遣い、行動のひとつひとつが変わっていくはずです。小さな微笑み、思いやりのこもった一言、相手の話に耳を傾ける姿勢。これらのささやかな行いが、平和の種となっていきます。
教皇レオ14世の第一声に込められたこの祈りが、私たち一人ひとりの毎日の行動につながっていきますように。そしてそれが、よりよい世界を築く一歩となっていくことを心から願っています。
‘Peace Be With You All’ — Pope Leo XIV's First Message

On 8 May 2025, a new pope was elected to lead the Catholic Church. Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost was chosen and began his new journey as Pope Leo XIV. When the new pope appeared on the balcony of St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican, the first words he spoke were like a quiet, deep prayer.
“La pace sia con tutti voi” (Peace be with you all).
This single phrase, spoken to a world in turmoil and division, seemed to bring hope and comfort to many people. It is more than a greeting. It is like a message symbolising the new Pope's vision.
During his subsequent inauguration Mass, Pope Leo XIV has spoken consistently of the importance of “dialogue” and “forgiveness.” Quoting the words of Jesus Christ to his disciples after his resurrection, “Peace be with you” (John 20), he gently but clearly showed the direction that modern society and the Church should take.
Looking at the world today, we see “conflict” and “division” spreading at various levels, including conflicts between countries, regional strife, ethnic divisions, domestic discord, and verbal abuse on social media. In such circumstances, these words are a call to each and every one of us.
These words can be quietly recited in our hearts, no matter where we are or who we are with. Whether at work, school, home, or in the online world, we can all be bearers of peace.
What can we do to make the world just a little kinder? By keeping these words in our hearts, I believe that our attitudes, words, and actions will gradually change. A small smile, a kind word, or listening attentively to others—these simple acts become seeds of peace.
May the prayer contained in Pope Leo XIV's first words connect with each of our daily actions. And may those connections become a step toward building a better world.
