カトリックの「美・善・真」に立ち返れ。

今年もカテドラル玉造教会では、多くの洗礼志願者に恵まれました。正確には21名の兄弟姉妹です。求道者の皆さんが、最初は素朴な関心から始まり、心を尽くして信仰を学び、回心へと歩んでいく姿を見つめながら、私はいつも考えさせられます。いったい何が、彼らの心を引き寄せているのでしょうか。きっかけは人それぞれですが、最終的にその心をとらえ、長い求道期間を支えているのは、「信仰そのものの魅力」なのです。
カトリック信仰は、感覚に訴える美しさをもち、存在そのものをいやし、そして理性にもかなうものです。だからこそ、私は自分の要理講座に「美・善・真を求めて」という名前をつけました。これらは単に神へと至る道であるだけではなく、神ご自身の「道」そのものだと信じているからです。
美の道
多くの人は、まず信仰の「美しさ」に出会うことで教会に近づきます。聖なる芸術や建築、音楽、惜しみない愛のわざ、荘厳な典礼、あるいは信仰深い友人の輝くような生き方や、伴侶の優しい姿の中に、その美しさを感じるのです。
ルネサンスやバロックの傑作に心を動かされたことのある方も多いでしょう。昨年だけでも、カラヴァッジオ作《キリストの埋葬》の大阪万博での展示には、数百万人が訪れました。事実、この二千年のあいだに、数えきれないほど多くの人々が、このような神的な美を通して心を神へと高めてきたのです。
善の道
神の美は感覚を喜ばせるだけではなく、心をいやし、変えていきます。美はつねに望ましいものであり、それゆえに真に「善い」ものです。より高い善を求めた人の一人が、Thomas Aquinasです。彼にとって、感覚的に経験される善との出会いは、「すべての善の源」である神へのまなざしへと導くものでした。
その具体的な例として、岡山聖虚画家（1895–1977）が挙げられます。彼は、自分より三世紀前に殉教した日本二十六聖人の証しを通して、神の崇高な善に出会いました。15年にわたり絹に聖人たちを描き続ける中で、主の善の深さに心を打たれ、1930年に洗礼を受け、保護の聖人としてアッシジの聖フランシスコを選んだのです。
真の道
典礼や芸術、音楽、そして無私の愛のわざなど、真正な信仰から生まれる多くの美しく気高い営みは、最終的に「神の真理」を指し示します。神は、目に見えるものも見えないものもすべてを創造された創造主であり、すべての善と美の源です。
はじめに神が宇宙を創造されたとき、すべては「良い」とされました。被造物の美しさや善さを愛し、その中にある真理を求めるとき、人はすでに「真理そのもの」である神に近づいているのです。科学もまた、「理解を求める信仰」の一つのかたちと言えるでしょう。
最近亡くなられた国際的に著名な物理学者、アントニオ・ツィキキは、こう語っています。「科学とは、人間が事実をもって、自然が精密な設計に従って書かれた一冊の書物であることを示すために持っている唯一の道具である」と。この設計は、より高い知性、すなわち神の真理を指し示しています。
四旬節の黙想
「心の清い人々は幸いである。その人たちは神を見る」（マタイ5・8）。多くの求道者が神の美・善・真を愛するようになり、この世のさまざまな魅力を手放して、より清い心で神に引き寄せられようとしています。そのとき、私たちカトリック信者は、彼らに対して自分たちの希望の理由を説明する用意ができているでしょうか。それとも、知らず知らずのうちに信仰がぬるくなってはいないでしょうか。
この四旬節の歩みの中で、少し立ち止まって自分に問いかけてみましょう。私たちの人生で、本当に心を引きつけているものは何でしょうか。求道者の皆さんとともに歩みながら、カトリック教会の中に見事に表されている神の美・善・真の豊かさを、あらためて見つめ直してみましょう。そしていつの日か、私たち自身の生き方もまた、神の美しさ、善さ、真理の光を、ほんの少しでも映し出すものとなりますように。
RETURNING TO CATHOLIC BEAUTY, GOODNESS, AND TRUTH

Thank God that our cathedral parish is blessed this year with dozens of baptismal candidates—21 brothers and sisters, to be exact! As I watch these catechumens’ journey toward conversion—from their initial curiosity to their wholehearted study of the faith—I often reflect on what truly draws them in. While their initial motivations vary, it is the attraction of faith that captures their hearts and sustains them through the long period of the catechumenate.
Our Catholic faith is indeed sensibly beautiful, existentially healing, and intellectually comprehensible. This is why I’ve named my catechism class "Seeking Beauty, Goodness, and Truth." I believe these are not just paths to God, but the very "way" of God Himself.
The Way of Beauty
Most people first encounter the faith through its beauty: in the pinnacle of sacred arts, architecture, music, in generous acts of charity, in the solemnity of the liturgy, in the gracefulness of the spouse, or in the radiant life of a Catholic friend. Many of you have likely experienced the masterpieces of the Renaissance or Baroque periods, haven’t you? Last year alone, the exhibition of Caravaggio’s The Entombment of Christ at EXPO 2025 in Osaka attracted millions! As a matter of fact, for the past two millennia, billions have lifted their hearts to God through such works of divine beauty.
The Way of Goodness
Divine beauty touches the senses, but it also heals and transforms the heart. It is always desirable and, therefore, truly good. For those who seek a higher degree of goodness—like St. Thomas Aquinas—the encounter with "sensible" goodness leads to an appreciation of the “source of all goodness”: God. A perfect example is the painter Seikyo Okayama (1895–1977). He discovered the sublime goodness of God through the witness of the 26 Martyrs of Nagasaki of three centuries before him. After 15 years of studying and painting these saints on silk, Okayama couldn’t help but be touched by the depth of the Lord’s goodness and was baptized in 1930, taking St. Francis of Assisi as his patron.
The Way of Truth
The many beautiful and noble works of sacred liturgy, art, music, and selfless charity inspired by authentic faith ultimately point to the truth of God—the Creator of all that is good and beautiful. From the very beginning, when God created the universe with all things visible and invisible, He saw that it was good. When people love the beauty and goodness of creation and seek the truth within them, they are already drawing near to the Truth Himself. Science is but a way of faith seeking understanding! Antonino Zichichi, the internationally renowned physicist who recently passed away, once said: “Science is the only tool that man possesses to demonstrate, with facts, that Nature is a book written according to a precise Design”—a design that points to a higher Intelligence, the truth of God.
A Lenten Reflection
“Blessed are the pure of heart, for they shall see God” (Mt 5:8). As many catechumens come to cherish the beauty, goodness, and truth of God and are ready to let go of worldly attractions in order to gain a pure heart being drawn more deeply to God, are we Catholics prepared to explain the reason for our hope to them? Or, have we perhaps grown lukewarm in our faith?
During this Lenten journey, let us pause and ask ourselves: What truly attracts us most in life? Let us walk alongside our catechumens and rediscover the many facets of God’s beauty, goodness, and truth so perfectly expressed in the Catholic Church. And may it be that one day, our own lives will also radiate even a few rays of His divine beauty, goodness, and truth.
