十字架の道行き
The Way of the Cross (via crucis) is a devotional practice that traces the journey of Jesus from his death sentence to his death and burial, while meditating on the events that occurred along the way. Its origin is attributed to pilgrims from Europe in Jerusalem in the 16th century. It came to be practiced in churches throughout the world. The Way of the Cross has steps, called "stations", the number of which is 14, to follow the sufferings of Jesus. Each step came to be marked with words and images to remind us of the scene.
The Way of the Cross in St. Mary's Cathedral is carved in wood, seven from the left wall in the front and seven from the back, for a total of 14 wood carvings. The sculptures are the work of Lungarce, a Tyrolean sculptor of repute for his wood carvings. Besides, there is a marble shallow relief carving of the burial of Jesus.
