クリスマスのメッセージ

昨年、ちょうどこの時期に、近隣のサレジオ会の学校から、高校生の生徒たちに向けてクリスマス講演を行うよう招待を受けました。そして今年も、神様は再び、学校の生徒たちにイエス・キリストについて語る機会を私に与えてくださいました。そこで、私が彼らのために準備した言葉を、皆さんとも共有したいと思います。
「また会えて嬉しいです。古屋シスターと野村先生、今年もクリスマスの話をする機会をくださって、本当にありがとうございます。僕のことを知らない人のために自己紹介すると、僕の名前はホセです。スペイン人です。11年前に神父になって、日本に来たのは2年半前です。それからずっと、隣の建物の玉造教会に住んでいます。
去年もここで話したんだけど、皆さんと僕はすごく似ているって言いました。去年は、僕も皆さんと同じ学生だったんです。学校で日本語を勉強していました。でも、それは4ヶ月前に終わりました。だからって、日本語ができるようになったわけじゃないんです。むしろ、まだまだ勉強が必要だなって実感してます。だから、古屋シスターと野村先生に頼んで、皆さんの授業に参加させてもらって、日本語の勉強を続けられたらいいなと思っているんです。
日本に来てから、日本語だけじゃなくて、日本の文化や習慣、歴史も勉強してきました。今日は、皆さんが良く知ってる物語を一つ分かち合いたいと思います。桃太郎の話です。桃から生まれた男の子! 成長して大人になると、すごい力と勇気が出てきて、鬼退治に行こうって決めるんですよね。そのために、犬と猿とキジのチームを作ります。最後には鬼をやっつけて、大きな宝物を手に入れて、みんなと分かち合います。
すごく面白いよね! きっと皆さんの多くがこの話を読んで楽しんだことがあると思います。ヨーロッパのギリシャ・ローマ文化にも似たような話があるんです。例えば、ヘラクレスっていう英雄がいて、彼も特別な生まれ方をして、倒せないような怪物と戦うんです。ヘラクレスのディズニー映画、見たことある人もいるかもしれないですね。
こういう物語って、僕たちの心の中にある何かを理解するのに役立ちます。みんな、悪をやっつけたいって思ってるんだけど、自分たちだけじゃ無理だって気づくんです。不可能なんです。だから、特別な力を持った人が現れて、世界の悪を終わらせて、正義と平和をもたらしてくれることを夢見るんです。これって日本だけじゃなくて、人間の心に深く刻まれた普遍的なものなんです。
でも、人間は桃から生まれないってことは、みんな知ってますよね。犬も猿もキジもしゃべりません。桃太郎もヘラクレスも架空のキャラクターです。実在しませんでした。人間の心の願いを表現するために役立つんです。こういう物語は僕たちの一番深い願いに響くから、注目を集めるんです。
でも…もし僕が、本当に誰かが特別な方法で生まれて、無限の力を持ってるって言ったら、どう? 信じる? 信じるのは難しいよね、わかります。桃太郎の話を読んで楽しむのと、本当に特別な誰かが悪と死をやっつけたって信じて喜ぶのとでは、全然違うって言えます。
では、ここからクリスマスの話になります。クリスマスって、本当はチョコレートをプレゼントする日じゃないんです。クリスマスは、心の一番深い願いや憧れが、本当の、決定的な答えを見つけることを祝う日なんです。この方向に8900キロ離れたところで、悪と死をやっつけた人が生まれました。その人の名前はイエス・キリスト。人間になった神様ご自身なんです。
こんなこと言うと、おかしいって思われるかもしれませんね。正直、桃太郎の話を読んで、悪をやっつけたいっていう願いを表現する方が、約2025年前にパレスチナで生まれた人が、僕たちを救うために来た神様だって可能性を考えるより、ずっと楽なんです。
僕がこの人と出会ったのは24歳の時でした。学生時代は、宗教とか全然興味なかったんです。楽しく過ごすのに忙しかったから。でも、24歳になった時、誰かが「クルシーリョ」っていう3日間の集まりに誘ってくれました。それが何なのか知らなかったけど、誘ってくれた人を信頼したんです。その3日間で、僕はイエス・キリストと出会いました。その出会いが僕の人生を変え始めたんです。悪と死をやっつけたのは桃太郎でもヘラクレスでもなく、イエス・キリストだって発見しました。失ってた希望を取り戻しました。少しずつ、ちょっと乱れてた自分の人生を整えていきました。そうやって、ある日、自分の人生には意味があるって言えるようになったんです。
あの「クルシーリョ」は、今までもらった中で最高のプレゼントの一つでした。あの3日間は、僕の人生の大きな転機になりました。そこでイエス・キリストと出会って、それが僕の人生の救いになったんです。クリスマスの時期って、たくさんプレゼントをする時期ですよね。だから、 昔僕がもらったのと同じプレゼントを、皆さんにも贈りたいと思いました。もう古屋シスターと話したんだけど、来年の夏、8月の休みの間に、この学校で「クルシーリョ」が行われます。皆さん全員招待します! このプロジェクトのために、スペインと沖縄から若い人たちが来ます。「クルシーリョ」についての詳しい情報は、またあとで伝えますね。
みんな、今日は桃太郎と、悪と死をやっつけたいっていう心の願いを思い出すところから始めました。そこから、クリスマスまでありえないジャンプをしました。そしてクリスマスで、悪と死をやっつけたいっていう心の願いに対する本当の、決定的な答えを見つけたんです。本当の、決定的な答えは一人の人で、その名前はイエス・キリストです。

Last year around this time, I received an invitation from the neighboring Salesian school to give a Christmas talk to the high school students. This year, God has once again given me the opportunity to speak about Jesus Christ to the students. I would like to share with you the words I prepared for them.
“Hello, again. I'd like to thank Sister Furuya and Professor Nomura for inviting me once more to talk to you about Christmas. For those who don't know me, I'm José Ramón and I'm Spanish. I was ordained a priest 11 years ago and arrived in Japan two and a half years ago. Since then, I've been living in the rectory next door at Tamatsukuri Church.
Last year I was here, in this same place, and I told you that you and I are very much alike. Last year, I was also a student, just like you. I was studying Japanese at school. But that ended four months ago. Though that doesn't mean I know Japanese. Rather, it's clear that I need to keep learning Japanese. That's why I was thinking of asking Sister Furuya and Professor Nomura for permission to let me attend class with you so I can continue learning Japanese.
Since I arrived in Japan, I haven't only studied Japanese. I've also studied Japanese culture, customs, and history. I'd like to share a story that you all know. It's the story of Momotaro. A boy born from a peach! When he grows up and becomes an adult, he develops great strength and courage that leads him to want to fight demons. For that, he chooses a team of animals made up of a dog, a monkey, and a pheasant. Finally, he defeats the demons and gets a great treasure that he shares with everyone.
It's a fun story! I'm sure many of you have enjoyed reading it. In Greco-Roman culture, in Europe, we have similar stories. For example, there's Hercules, who is also born in an extraordinary way and fights impossible monsters. There's a Disney movie about Hercules that perhaps you've seen.
These stories help us understand something we have in our hearts. We all want to defeat evil, but we realize we can't do it by ourselves—it's impossible. That's why we dream of special people, with great powers; people who are capable of ending the evil in the world and bringing us justice and peace. This isn't only in Japanese culture, but it's something universal because it's deeply engraved in the human heart.
However, we know that people aren't born from peaches. And that dogs, monkeys, and pheasants don't talk. Both Momotaro and Hercules are fictional characters. They didn't exist. They help us express a desire of the human heart. Thanks to that, these stories are able of capturing our attention, since they correspond to our deepest desires.
But ... what if I told you that someone has actually been born, in an extraordinary way, and with infinite power? Would you believe me? I understand it's hard to believe. But I can tell you that enjoying the story of Momotaro is not the same as enjoying and believing that someone special has really been able to defeat evil and death.
And this is when we begin to talk about Christmas. Essentially, Christmas is not a holiday for giving chocolate. Christmas is the celebration in which we rejoice that the deepest desires and longings of the heart have a true and definitive answer. About 8,900 kilometers from here, a person has been born who has defeated evil and death. His name is Jesus Christ. And he is God himself made man.
I understand it may sound crazy to say something like that. Honestly, it's much more comfortable to read the story of Momotaro and express our desire to defeat evil than to consider the real possibility that a person born in Palestine about 2,025 years ago is God himself who has come to save us.
I didn't discover this person until I was 24 years old. During my student years I had no interest in anything having to do with religion. I was too busy having a good time. But when I turned 24, someone invited me to experience a three-day encounter called "Cursillo." I didn't know what that was, but I trusted the person who invited me. During those three days I encountered Jesus Christ. That encounter began to change my life. I discovered that evil and death had not been defeated by Momotaro or by Hercules, but by Jesus Christ. I recovered the hope I had lost. And little by little I began ordering my life, which was somewhat disordered. That's how I was able to say one day that my life had meaning.
That "Cursillo" was one of the greatest gifts I've ever been given. That three-day encounter marked a before and after in my life. There, I encountered Jesus Christ and that was my salvation. Christmas is a time when many gifts are given. That's why I also wanted to offer you the same gift that was offered to me. I already spoke with Sister Furuya. Next summer during the August vacation, here at the school, we'll celebrate a "Cursillo" to which you're all invited. Young people will come from Spain and Okinawa for this project. I'll give you more information about the "Cursillo" later.
Dear schoolmates, today we began by remembering Momotaro and the desire we all carry in our hearts to defeat evil and death. From there, we made an impossible leap to Christmas. At Christmas we discover the true and definitive answer to the heart's desire to defeat evil and death. The true and definitive answer is a person; his name is Jesus Christ.”
