私たちの一日は、まだ終わっていない

敬老の日を迎えるこの時期、私たちは人生を重ねてこられた方々に感謝するとともに、一人ひとりの人生の尊さについて考えます。
この夏、ポルトガルで両親と過ごす時間がありました。父は81歳、母は80歳です。二人ともおかげさまで元気にしていますが、少しずつ年齢を重ね、以前とは違うことも増えてきたと感じました。たとえば、父は以前のように自分で髭を剃ることが難しくなっていました。そこで今回は、私が父の髭を剃るようになりました。
父の髭を剃りながら、ふと考えました。昔は父が私の世話をしてくれましたが、今は私が父を手伝っています。年齢を重ねるにつれて、できることは少しずつ変わっていきます。しかし、できることが変わっても、その人の価値が変わるわけではありません。
私たちは、よく「何ができるか」「どれだけ人の役に立てるか」で、自分や人の価値を考えてしまいます。身体が弱くなったり、以前できていたことができなくなったりすると、「もう自分には何もできない」と感じることもあります。
今年の敬老の日のお祝いのミサでは、ぶどう園の主人が、一日の間に何度も働く人を探しに出かける場面が福音として読まれました（マタイ20・1-16）。
ここに、神様の姿を見ることができます。神様は、人生のどの時期においても、私たち一人ひとりを招いてくださいます。
年齢を重ねても、身体が弱くなっても、その人にしか果たせない役割があります。祈ること、誰かの話を聞くこと、経験を分かち合うこと、優しい言葉をかけること。そして、何かをすることが難しくなっても、そこにいてくださること自体が、家族や教会にとって大きな支えになります。
あのぶどう園の主人のように、今日も神様は一人ひとりを招いてくださっています。若い人も、高齢の方も、元気な人も、身体の弱っている人も、誰一人として神様のぶどう園で余計な人はいません。
私たちの一日は、まだ終わっていません。それぞれの年齢、それぞれの歩みの中で、今日も神様からの招きがあります。互いの存在を大切にし、支え合いながら、キリストによって結ばれた家族として歩んでいきたいと思います。
Our Day Is Not Yet Over

As we celebrate Respect for the Aged Day, we give thanks for those who have journeyed through many years of life, and we are invited to reflect on the dignity and preciousness of each person’s life.
This summer, I had the opportunity to spend some time with my parents in Portugal. My father is 81 and my mother is 80. Thankfully, they are both doing well, although I have noticed that, as they grow older, there are more things they can no longer do as they once did. For example, my father had begun to find it difficult to shave himself as he used to. So, this time, I started shaving my father’s face for him.
As I shaved my father, I found myself thinking about how things have changed. When I was younger, my father took care of me. Now, I am the one helping him. As we grow older, the things we are able to do gradually change. Yet, when what we can do changes, our value as a person does not.
We often judge our own worth, and the worth of others, by asking what we can do or how useful we can be to others. When our bodies become weaker or we can no longer do things we once could, we may begin to feel, “There is nothing I can do anymore.”
At this year’s Mass for Respect for the Aged Day, we heard the Gospel passage in which the owner of a vineyard goes out several times during the day to look for workers (Matthew 20:1–16).
Here we can see something of the way God looks at us. At every stage of our lives, God calls each one of us.
Even as we grow older and our physical strength declines, each person still has a role that only they can fulfill: praying, listening to someone, sharing their experience, or offering a kind word. And even when it becomes difficult to do many things, simply being present can itself be a great source of strength for our families and our Church.
Like the owner of the vineyard, God continues to call each one of us today. Young or old, strong or frail, no one is unnecessary in God’s vineyard.
Our day is not yet over. At every age and in every stage of our journey, God continues to call us today. Let us cherish one another and support one another, walking together as a family united in Christ.
