四旬節のはじまりに

来る2月18日の灰の水曜日から、復活を祝う準備期間である四旬節が始まります。四旬節は、私たち一人ひとりに静かに語りかけてくる、恵みの時です。
その歩みは、灰の水曜日に告げられる言葉から始まります。「回心して、福音を信じなさい。」
回心とは何か
灰を受けながら聞くこの言葉は、決して私たちを責めるためのものではありません。命令形ではありますが、神様の慈しみを込めた呼びかけです。
回心とは、「もっと立派になりなさい」という命令ではなく、「もう一度、わたしの方を向きなさい」という、神様のやさしい呼び声なのです。
文字通り、回心とは、神様に心を回すことです。疲れたり、迷ったり、神様から遠く感じてしまった心を、神様の方へ向け直すことです。
希望の巡礼者として
去年の聖年を通して見てきましたように、神様は私たちを希望へと招いておられます。特別な一年が終わったからといって、希望が終わるわけではありません。
四旬節の40日間は、聖年のあともなお、私たちが「希望の巡礼者」として歩み続ける旅です。日常の中で、希望は育てられていきます。四旬節の典礼は、その希望を私たちの心に何度も思い起こさせてくれます。
主日の福音を聞き、祈り、賛美し、悔い改めの招きを受け取るたびに、私たちは少しずつ歩みを進めています。ときには歩みが遅く、変われない自分にがっかりすることもあるかもしれません。けれども希望とは、「もう達成されていること」から与えられるのではなく、「神様が共に歩んでくださる」という信頼から生まれるものなのです。
四旬節の実り
四旬節の祈り、節制、施しも、私たちの喜びを奪うためのものではありません。余計なものを手放すことで、心にスペースが生まれ、そこに神様の光が差し込むのです。
誰かを思いやる小さな行い、祈りの中で神様に心を向けるひとときが、私たちを希望の道へと導いてくれます。
復活へ向かう旅
この旅は、復活祭へと向かっています。十字架の先に復活があるように、四旬節の先には、命と希望の光があります。灰の水曜日から始まった歩みは、復活の喜びへとつながっているのです。
私たちは一人で歩いているのではありません。教会の典礼の中で、神様と、そして兄弟姉妹と共に歩んでいます。この四旬節、心を神様に向け直しながら、希望の巡礼者として、一歩一歩、復活へと歩んでいきましょう。
At the Beginning of Lent

Beginning on February 18, Ash Wednesday, the season of Lent—the period of preparation for celebrating the Resurrection—begins. Lent is a time of grace that quietly speaks to each one of us.
This journey begins with the words proclaimed on Ash Wednesday: “Repent and believe in the Gospel.”
What Does Repentance Mean?
The words we hear while receiving the ashes are by no means meant to reproach us. Although they are expressed in the imperative form, they are a call filled with God’s mercy.
Repentance is not a command that says, ““Try harder,” but a gentle call from God saying, “Turn toward me once again.”
Quite literally, repentance means turning one’s heart toward God. It means redirecting hearts that are tired, lost, or have come to feel distant from God, and turning them back toward God.
As Pilgrims of Hope
As we have seen through last year’s Jubilee, God is inviting us toward hope. Just because that special year has come to an end does not mean that hope has ended.
The 40 days of Lent are a journey in which we continue, even after the Jubilee, to walk as “pilgrims of hope.” In daily life, hope is nurtured. The liturgy of Lent repeatedly reminds our hearts of that hope.
Each time we listen to the Sunday Gospel, pray, offer praise, and receive the invitation to repentance, we move forward little by little. At times our steps may be slow, and we may feel disappointed with ourselves for not being able to change. Yet hope is not something that is given because something has already been accomplished, but something that is born from trust in the truth that God walks with us.
The Fruits of Lent
The Lenten practices of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving are not meant to take away our joy. By letting go of what is unnecessary, space is created in our hearts, and God’s light enters there.
Small acts of care for others, and moments of turning our hearts toward God in prayer, lead us onto the path of hope.
A Journey Toward the Resurrection
And this journey is moving toward Resurrection. Just as there is Resurrection beyond the Cross, beyond Lent there is the light of life and hope. The journey that began on Ash Wednesday is connected to the joy of the Resurrection.
We are not walking alone. Within the liturgy of the Church, we walk together with God and with our brothers and sisters. This Lent, as we turn our hearts once again toward God, let us walk step by step toward the Resurrection as pilgrims of hope.
